The rumors are now official: HARD Day of the Dead will not be happening this year. For the first time since the annual dance music festival’s launch eight years ago, they are pulling the plug on the Halloween-inspired event.

Organizers are quick to point out that they’re not cancelling anything, per se. Rather, as reported in the L.A. Timesthey are simply confirming that nothing will be in the works. Had the festival been set to take place, splashy announcements would likely have had to go out months ago, so this news likely does not come as a complete shock to the festival’s core audience.

HARD founder Gary Richards may have made the decision to skip the fall festival months ago, stating in an Instagram message that has been shared on EDM blogs that they concluded in January that hosting two events would not be feasible for the organization this year.

Whenever it was decided, it may seem appropriate that the organizers are regrouping this season after their summer event was sadly marred by tragedy. Three concert-goers died at HARD’s July event, HARD Summer, in what were reported to likely be drug-related incidents.

For partiers still looking to celebrate the Halloween season with a dance music festival, Escape: Psycho Circus seems set to fill the void. That two-day event will feature music from Four Tet, Duke Dumont, Claude VonStroke and many others, along with haunted house mazes and other Halloween-themed entertainments.
