The best Halloween costumes we saw in L.A. in 2017

Our last-minute trip to the costume shop just couldn’t compete with the creative costumes that Angelenos threw together this Halloween. We swung by some of our favorite Halloween parties—including A Beastly Ball, KCRW’s Masquerade Ball and the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval—and were astounded by the impressive Halloween costumes we saw. We spotted superhero-inspired attire, cartoon characters and all sort of nostalgic getups. From the cast of Cats to Angelyne—pink Corvette included—these are the best Halloween costumes we saw in Los Angeles this year.   Photograph: Jakob N. West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval 2017

By far L.A.’s biggest Halloween party, the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval never disappoints when it comes to creative costumes and outlandish revelry. Thousands of attendees shuffled across Santa Monica Boulevard and into the slew of West Hollywood bars that line the street.  In addition to the usual sexy costumes—Carnaval attendees, you’re making us feel pretty bad about our own exercise regimen—you could spot outfits inspired by everything from It to Hamilton, as well as particularly clever costumes like a fidget spinner and Angelyne. Check out our favorite photos and costumes from the West Hollywood festival below. All photographs by Gil Riego.                                                                                     Want more? Sign up here to stay in the know.

KCRW's Masquerade Ball 2017 photos

KCRW brought its legendary Halloween masquerade ball back from the dead, and it didn’t disappoint. The Halloween party returned to the MacArthur (former known as the Park Plaza) after taking two years off for the historic Westlake venue’s renovation. This year’s KCRW Masquerade Ball brought DJ sets from the Black Madonna and Matthew Dear along with performances from the Lucent Dossier Experience and Lucha VaVoom—and, of course, plenty of boogying masqueraders. Scroll below to scope out the return of the party and some of our favorite costumed revelers. All photographs by Jakob N. Layman.                                                                         Want more? Sign up here to stay in the know.

A Beastly Ball 2017 photos

Angelenos donned their best dweller-of-the-night attire as Ace Hotel presented its annual Beastly Ball. The Halloween party featured DJs, drinks and costumed reveler’s best attempts at dark arts inside the swanky gothic lobby of the Theatre at Ace Hotel. Before the bash, the theatre screened La Belle et la Bête alongside a reimagined, live score. The popular fairy tale Beauty and the Beast came to life in this operatic adaptation as part of the LA Opera's Off-Grand Series. Philip Glass composed an enchanting new score for Jean Cocteau’s 1946 cinematic masterpiece as live singers performed in synchronization with the actors in the film. Scope out our favorite costumes from the party below. All photographs by Gil Riego.                                                                                           Want more? Many of those sights are first-rate for the entire circle of relatives (although some are really scarier than others – use caution whilst bringing small kids) and they’re the ideal manner to rejoice Halloween.
