It’s been 25 years since Nancy Silverton introduced a new product line to grocery store shelves, but, with her recent acquisition of a dedicated factory space in the Arts District, her Nancy’s Fancy gelato will be rolling out at scale soon.

The space that will soon be churning out Nancy’s Fancy was, until fairly recently, occupied by another sweet operation, Mast Brothers Chocolate. Now location will be put to use producing pints of Silverton’s all-natural concoctions in flavors including amarena cherry, coconut stracciatella. There is a butterscotch budino flavor—which will likely come as no surprise to anyone who has tried Silverton’s version of the dessert on the menu at Mozza—and a flavor featuring coffee from the factory’s now-neighbor Stumptown.

Previously, the Nancy’s Fancy gelatos had been produced at a small kitchen in the Valley, but were only available in limited runs at a selection of local retailers. Now they’ll be able to expand considerably, very much like Silverton did years ago with her La Brea Bakery brand of breads.

And, while you might be forgiven for thinking that Los Angeles has reached a saturation point for artisan ice cream shops lately, there are unconfirmed rumors afoot that some portion of the new facility might eventually be converted to a gelateria so you can enjoy your scoops on site, according to LAist.

Gelato, a frozen treat of Italian origin, is generally distinguished from other types of ice cream by being lower in fat and higher in sugar. While there is no shortage of great places to get a cone in L.A., gelato is a little more rare, so we’re excited to see what the James Beard-winning Silverton brings to the market.
