If there are two icons of Los Angeles’ official cuisine, it’s got to be our tacos and our vegan fare, right? Combine those two things and you’ve got L.A.’s Best Vegan Taco Competition, a lunchtime party featuring nine of the city’s plant-based chefs whipping up their own takes on the humble taco.

A $20 ticket (proceeds go to the Humane Society of Los Angeles) will gain you access to the event, to be held at Café Gratitude in Larchmont Village. Grab a glass of beer, kombucha or cold brew coffee, listen to some live music and then get down to the business at hand—aka eating all the tacos.

The competing taco chefs are: Dreux Ellis of Café Gratitude, Mollie and Elias Sosa Engelhart of Sage Organic Vegan Bistro, Roy Elam of Plant Food + Wine, Chandra Gilbert of Gracias Madre, Andrew Perez of Organix, Mick Weldon of 100 Tacos, Summer Phoenix of Phoenix Family Foods, Anthony Berganza of Red O and, representing the Bay Area vegan contingent, Raul Medina of Oakland’s Taqueria La Venganza.

The event is organized by Eat Drink Vegan, the same team behind the annual Vegan Beer & Food Fest series, which has been going on in L.A. and Portland since 2010. On the Sunday following the taco competition, the busy team is also involved with Moby’s Circle V: A Music, Activism and Food event to take place at the Fonda Theater, featuring Moby, Cold Cave and other musical guests and, of course, another array of vegan food vendors.

L.A’s Best Vegan Taco Competition takes place October 22 from 12pm to 3pm at Café Gratitude Larchmont. Tickets are $20.
