Paris Photo, an international art fair focused on photography and the moving image in the 20th and 21st centuries, is having its third U.S. event this weekend at Paramount Studios. Saturday and Sunday will be packed with events that cover the full spectrum of photography, from conversations with artists about their creative process and the function of the image, to book signings and exhibits.

For a glimpse into what portraits in California were like before selfies, the CALIFORNIA UNEDITED! exhibit will focus each year on rare material or images that haven’t been publicly displayed before. This year, the spotlight is on R.J. Arnold’s glass plate portraits of members of his San Louis Obispo community in the late 19th century. If contemporary work is more your style, Antépisode (French for “prequel”) will highlight Silicon Valley and explore the environment where technological innovations are born. With 79 exhibitors presenting work throughout the fair this year, you might leave re-evaluating your approach to your Instagram feed.
