Friday

Start your weekend at NerdMelt for Not Safe: Staff Infection with Nikki Glaser. The stand-up and some staffers from her superbly perverted Comedy Central show, Not Safe, are performing material (free of charge) about dating, relationships and lots and lots of sex.

Alternatively, make your way to West LA for Art of the Title presents… In Conversation with Star Wars Designer Dan Perri. The excellent site dedicated to film credit sequences is hosting a Q&A with title designer Dan Perri, whose work includes Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raging Bull and more.

Follow that up with a late night at the nearby Nuart Theatre, which is hosting a midnight screening of Spirited Away. Hayao Miyazaki's animated tale of a frightened girl in a phantasmagoric netherworld has few rivals as a work of visual imagination.

Saturday

Pay tribute to LA's late, great puppeteer on his 92nd birthday during Bob Baker Day. The namesake theater is hosting an afternoon of puppet shows, live music, comedy and more, with an appearance from DJ Lance Rock and the Yo Gabba Gabba crew. The celebration spills out onto First Street with an outdoor stage and puppetry workshops.

Wanna be the very best? Like no one ever was? Then stock up on Pokémon apparel at the JapanLA x Pokémon Boutique pop-up. The Melrose shop is throwing a party in celebration of its new collaboration (and Pokémon's 20th anniversary), with exclusive tote bags, a photobooth and trivia.

Step into the past at the Fonda Theatre for the annual Edwardian Ball. This delightfully off-kilter costume and dance party is devoted to the macabre work of writer and illustrator Edward Gorey.

Alternatively, wrap up the evening at REDCAT for Callings Out of Context. This musical accompaniment to the Broad's Pop Art collection pairs musicians with that same avant-garde and reflective spirit; tonight, former Battles frontman Tyondai Braxton shares the bill with electronic-meets-acoustic composer Daniel Wohl.

Sunday

Start your Sunday with a spicy bowl of beans at the 4th Annual Vegan Chili Cook-OffTony's Darts Away is hosting five chili champions who'll be battling it out to claim the No. 1 title.

Looking to make the Academy Awards a little more interesting? Head to the Cinefamily for Doug Benson Watches the Oscars, in which the comedian and his friends talk over the awards show broadcast. Show up early for a live episode of podcast Dining with Doug and Karen, as well as a potluck.

If the Oscars are too tame for you, add some tapas and topless ladies to your Sunday night. Settle in at El Cid for dinner and a performance by Sultry Sweet Burlesque, which is presenting its monthly magic and striptease filled variety show.
