Jell-O at Clifton's Cafeteria

After four years and over $10 million in renovations, Clifton's Republic has reopened Downtown, bringing back a beloved institution that was once a landmark of Downtown's bustling Broadway. New owner Andrew Meieran has filled the five floors with intricate detail, from vignettes of famous LA sites to taxidermy to a massive tree that shoots up through the building. The first floor cafeteria offers plates of comfort food and that famous Jell-O, while the floors above include multiple bars (including a tiki bar!) and dining nooks.

As a kid in the 40s going to Clifton's for lunch was a treat for being a patient shopper.  The restoration has been done thoughtfully, creatively, and maintained the quaint humor of the original.  It's a cafeteria!  So go for the meatloaf, delicious!  On Sundays a jazz quartet plays, and there is not a 'brunch' surcharge.  Sit in one of the unique horn chairs by the fireplace which is placed, ironically, in the redwood tree.  Or have lunch beside the hairy, full sized bison.  Every where you look there is a clever touch.

If you come here for the food, you'll be disappointed, but if you're looking for somewhere truly unique to spend time, Clifton's is it.  A treasure trove of LA history, it's been updated with loving care and sports some of the finest design you'll see.  Grab a cocktail at either of the two bars (still waiting on a few more to open) and soak in the atmosphere.  You won't stop finding new things to marvel at.  The cocktails are delicious (if sometimes a little too heavy on the ice), though the food is still a little uneven--that said, their jello desserts are shockingly good!  Get one!
