The eight best Brambles in NYC

Raise a glass with the crisp and fruity Bramble cocktail made with gin, lemon and blackberry liqueur

By Lauren Rothman

At cocktail hour, few drinks shout “spring” as emphatically as the Bramble. Traditionally a light mix of dry gin, lemon and blackberry liqueur, it’s perfect for sipping on a rooftop bar. All around town, top bartenders are interpreting the classic cocktail, adding a slip of white wine, subbing in other spirits and swapping out fruits. Whether you like it classic or with a twist, these are the eight best bars for ordering a Bramble in NYC.

Bars Gastropubs Gramercy

This unassuming Gramercy gastropub takes seasonality seriously, so it’s no surprise that along with its food menu, its cocktail menu changes year-round. The bar is currently serving up its summer version of a Bramble: a classic iteration with gin, blackberry-violet liqueur and house-made jam.

Bars Cocktail bars Brooklyn Heights

This cozy Brooklyn Heights tavern plates straightforward (but perfectly executed) dishes such as grilled Berkshire pork and seared diver scallops. Its drink menu is equally reliable, and its Long Bottom Bramble with vodka, blackberries and a touch of sauvignon blanc is crisp perfection.

Restaurants American Fort Greene

This handsome Fort Greene seafood spot boasts an excellent raw bar and large plates of fish stew, clam-scattered pasta and blackened catfish. To wash it all down, sip the classic, bracing bramble made with gin, lemonade and blackberries.

Restaurants American Williamsburg

If you prefer Williamsburg to Fort Greene, head to Walter’s sibling on Grand Street, where you can munch on a similar menu and nurse that same great bramble. Yes, it’s so nice you should have it twice.

Restaurants American Lower East Side

This ultra-hip LES spot from celeb chef Chris Santos (with an entrance through a tricked-out pawn shop) has cleverly named cocktails such as the O.D.B., the Old Dirty Bramble. It adds a smoky element to the classic drink, subbing in reposado tequila for gin and smoked blackberries instead of fresh ones, also adding honey, ginger juice and lemon.

Bars Gastropubs Upper West Side

This Upper West Side whiskey bar serves sturdy, umami-heavy plates such as chicken liver pate and a burger smothered in fontina, which stand up nicely to the bar’s super-comprehensive selection of brown spirits. But gin-lovers are in luck, too: The house bramble is a textbook version of the drink, with lemon and fresh blackberries.

7. Bramble at Backyard

Restaurants American Park Slope

This welcoming Park Slope bar and restaurant boasts a comforting menu of hearty fare, expertly mixed cocktails and, yes, an expansive backyard. Grab a seat outside, order a house flatbread and sip a classic gin-and-blackberry bramble in the fresh air.

Bars Cocktail bars Murray Hill

This slick Chelsea cocktail lounge knows its way around a good drink, so it comes as no surprise that its bramble is pitch-perfect. With clean Beefeater gin, lemon juice, simple syrup and muddled blackberries served over crushed ice, it’s a pure expression of the tipple.
