Fireboat

Founded by Miles and Alex Pincus, Crew is all about giving historic boats a second life on land. Its fleet includes Frying Pan, a former lightship turned Chelsea party destination, and Grand Banks, a restored 1940s schooner known for shucking hundreds of oysters a day. Fireboat follows in the footsteps of its sister ships but takes a more laid-back approach—you won't find oysters or lobster rolls here. Instead, the rocking ship is still a good time for extinguishing that thirst, all while drinking in sunset views at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The vibe: As its name suggests, the decommissioned 1961 fireboat once belonged to the FDNY before the Crew team took it over and docked it in Brooklyn Bridge Park. (It's also where the former Pilot used to float before it sank, RIP.) They don't take reservations, meaning any landlubber can climb aboard the double-decker ship for a few drinks and seriously awesome views of the NYC skyline. 

The food: We wouldn't necessarily plan a dinner here, but if a few beers have got you feeling peckish, Fireboat offers an abbreviated menu that includes seaweed-flecked fries and jerk chicken sandwiches. Our favorite of the bunch goes to the jumbo shell-on prawns lathered in a brick red barbecue sauce—which will get under your fingernails, but the mess is worth it. There's also a somewhat famous Big Pickle, if you happen to like very juicy pickles. Bite with caution, or risk spritzing yourself and your neighbors.

The drink: There's a short list of boozy cocktails, priced comparably to the mainland, aimed at getting you drunk more than wowing you. For $16, you can get the gin-based Marinier, earthy and floral thanks to a swirl of elderflower and matcha; and the Tropicalia with vodka, watermelon and lime. The onboard golden taps that once shot out water now dispense wine and beer. Spirit-free options are also available.

Time Out tip: The same crew who runs this mighty vessel now run the ship at Montero, an 87-year-old marinier bar known in the neighborhood for its sparkling lights and all-night karaoke fest. So regain your sea legs and head east for a nightcap.
