NYC beaches are still closed today because of riptides

Despite quite a bit of weathermongering, Hurricane Hermine passed right by the East Coast with relatively little mass destruction. Yes, all city beaches were closed on Sunday, ruining some of our Labor Day plans, but the tropical storm skipped NYC save for some strong winds and extra-large waves on the shore.

But today, if you’re still out at your beach house sitting on the front porch by the ocean instead of back in the office, you should stay out of the water. Also, can we be friends? The National Weather Service put out a warning this morning about the high rip current risk at NYC and Long Island beaches, with waves up to eight feet high and riptides that are “life threatening to anyone who enters the surf.”

But it’s not all bad news! New York’s best beaches have extended their season to September 11, so you get one more week before fully succumbing to sweater weather.
