Want to make sure your dating profile is different from everyone else’s? So did artist R. Luke DuBois, who signed up for 21 different online dating apps and services to gather information from 19 million dating profiles. (Suddenly, being single doesn’t sound so lonely.) The result was these maps of the most common words used in dating profiles in certain U.S. cities.
The maps exclude common profile words like “love” and “sex” and “not my kid.” (That last one is just a joke. Unfortunately.) And the most-used words in NYC tell us a whole lot about why dating in NYC is the worst (but also sometimes the best).
The overall top word for NYC is “now.” Being the city that never sleeps mean you can Netflix and chill all night long, and prowlers on Tinder are well aware of this. But let’s look at the details of specific boroughs and neighborhoods. In Chelsea, a keyword is “creatives,” and the East Village has “photography” and “brunch.” As for Brooklyn, it has “DJ,” “writing,” “psychiatrist,” and, yes, “hipsters.”
The maps of words used in other U.S. cities are just as intriguing. Washington, D.C., has “political” and “journalist,” and Los Angeles profiles are heavy on “spanking” and “screenwriter.” Sounds about right.
