RECOMMENDED: Full guide to the Whitney Museum in NYC

We've already weighed in on the fact that the new Whitney is finally, inescapably open. And there is also the fact that today marks the museum's official kick-off. But guess what? The fun isn't stopping with today's inaugural festivities. Tomorrow, Saturday May 2, the Whitney is throwing an outdoor block party just outside its entrance on Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District. In lieu of the usual zeppole stands and stalls for cheap pashmina scarves, the Whitney's version of a street fair will feature “booths designed by a diverse group of contemporary artists and community organizations,” plus a main stage for performance art acts, puppetry, music, dance, music and poetry reading. If that's a bit highbrow for you, there's also going to be karaoke! Kids are welcome, and best of all, it's free.

Also, if you'd like to get inside to visit the building, but don't want to shell out the admission, the Whitney is giving away free tickets on a first come, first serve basis. So hurry: The supply, as they say, won't last.
