When I was in high school, we went to the movies. It's just what you did, even if it meant sitting through Derailed, a film in which Jennifer Aniston seduces Clive Owen on a train to steal his money or something. Look, it was a way to get away from our parents. Nowadays, these damn youths with their Snapchats and Periscopes and possible illiteracy aren't crowding the cinemas in quite the same force, which means theaters are getting inventive.
AMC Kips Bay 15 today launched an IMAX VR Center, a gallery of twelve pods in the theater lobby that allows users to try out virtual reality experiences solo or in groups. IMAX has commissioned five–to 150-minute experiences from big-name action directors like the Russo Brothers, Justin Lin and Louis Leterrier.
Right now, they're offering several games like Tilt Brush and Knockout League, along with a program based on the new Tom Cruise Mummy movie—which is a waste, because any Mummy that doesn't include Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz is absolutely illegitimate—so do with that what you will. And may I just say something? I saw Avengers: Age of Ultron on my birthday (no, I know) at the AMC Kips Bay 15 IMAX, and...it's not an IMAX. It's a big screen, which is exceptional in NYC, but it's not a real, gigantic IMAX.
Is it just me? Am I onto a screen-size conspiracy?
