It’s not throwing away its shot: Hamilton is about to take over Central Park.
In honor of the show’s 10th anniversary on Broadway, the Public Theater and Walt Disney Studios are teaming up for a one-night-only screening of the filmed production at the newly renovated Delacorte Theater tonight, September 3. The screening begins at 7pm and, yes, it’s totally free if you can snag a spot in the standby line.
This isn’t just any outdoor movie night: It’s the official New York premiere of the filmed production that’s hitting cinemas nationwide September 5. The Public is treating it like the Broadway-Hollywood hybrid it is, complete with appearances from Lin-Manuel Miranda and original cast members and the bragging rights of seeing one of the most culture-shifting musicals of the century projected under the stars. The Delacorte, fresh off a $77 million glow-up, is normally home to Shakespeare in the Park, but tonight it becomes the most sought-after open-air stage in town.

Here’s the fine print for getting in: Most seats have been snapped up by donors shelling out anywhere from $200 to $5,000 for reserved spots, cocktails and selfies with Miranda himself. But a limited number of free standby tickets will be handed out beginning at 5 pm right at the theater, with a strict two-per-person limit. It’s first-come, first-served, and you can bet the line will snake around the park by mid-afternoon. Bring snacks, charge your phone and prepare to channel your inner Aaron Burr—waiting for it.
If you’ve never seen Hamilton on Broadway, this is your chance to catch the original Tony- and Pulitzer-winning cast—Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs—in all their glory. And if you have seen it before? Well, when’s the last time you watched it in Central Park with a few thousand superfans humming “My Shot” under their breath? Exactly.
If you can’t make it tonight, don’t despair. The filmed version opens in theaters nationwide this Friday, September 5 and Broadway Week is running two-for-one ticket deals all month long. Plus, September 7 brings Founded Broadway, a free mega-concert featuring numbers from 22 shows, from Wicked to Chicago. But tonight is all about the Delacorte—and about Alexander Hamilton, still rewriting the rules 10 years on.
