If you’ve ever wondered what New York smelled like at 3am in 1950 (hint: briny, busy and a little chaotic), the Fulton Fish Market is as close as you’ll get. Now, for the first time in two decades, the market is returning—sort of. Beginning Friday, September 5, FultonFishMarket.com, the country’s largest online seafood retailer, will stage an immersive pop-up at 226 Front Street in the South Street Seaport, just steps from where the original market sold its catch for nearly 200 years.
The project, cheekily dubbed “The Fulton Fish Market Experience,” runs through Friday, October 31 and promises more than a history lesson. Guests can tuck into a curated menu of seafood dishes sourced straight from the market, including a smoked salmon and caviar-topped Tompkins Square Bagel sandwich and, for those feeling extra decadent, “The Dream” Sandwich, finished with a full ounce of specialty caviar. If that doesn’t scream downtown power breakfast, nothing does.

But this isn’t just about eating (though, let’s be honest, that’s a big part of it). The space will also feature interactive kiosks where you can browse FultonFishMarket.com’s offerings—from live lobsters to gleaming oysters—and have them shipped directly to your apartment. The idea is to show off how a market once notorious for its Mafia ties and midnight auctions has reinvented itself as a sleek, national seafood powerhouse.
Adding some extra sizzle, the pop-up will host a rotating lineup of events, from chef-driven dinners to community workouts (because nothing says core strength like squats followed by shrimp cocktail), all a nod to the Seaport’s past and a celebration of how far the brand has come since decamping for the Bronx in 2005.
“The Fulton Fish Market has always been part of New York’s DNA,” says Mike Tonetti, CEO of FultonFishMarket.com. He’s not wrong—the market once handled millions of pounds of seafood daily, rivaling Tokyo’s Tsukiji for scale and drama. Now, it’s inviting New Yorkers back into the story, this time without the 4 am wake-up call.
The Fulton Fish Market Experience is open weekends, 9am–4pm, through October 31 at 226 Front Street.
