Bowen Yang is about to put his own spin on Broadway’s most unhinged First Lady.
The Saturday Night Live favorite will make his Broadway debut as Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary! beginning September 15 at the Lyceum Theatre. Yang will take over the title role from Meg Stalter, whose 10-week run as the boozy, cabaret-obsessed Mary started last month and wraps up September 12. Yang will star in the Tony-winning comedy for 12 weeks, through December 6.
“My friendship with Cole has brought me many places over the years: late-night pizzerias, cross-borough social-distance walks, a tough production of Les Misérables sung in Dutch,” Yang said in a statement. “But being part of their deranged and profound masterpiece, Oh, Mary!, is my favorite one by far. I will spend the rest of my life thanking them for the best Broadway debut a cis gay guy with limited singing ability could ask for.”
Honestly, limited singing ability might be exactly what this particular cabaret requires.

Written by Cole Escola, Oh, Mary! reimagines Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks before Abraham Lincoln’s assassination as a vicious, miserable alcoholic whose primary concern is neither the Civil War nor her husband’s presidency but her thwarted dreams of becoming a cabaret star. Time Out theater critic Adam Feldman gave the production five stars when it opened on Broadway in 2024, calling it “dizzyingly, breathtakingly funny” and “a fast and wild joy ride.”
Yang joins a very funny (and increasingly starry) line of actors who have stepped into Mary’s bratty curls since Escola originated the role: Betty Gilpin, Tituss Burgess, Jinkx Monsoon, Jane Krakowski, Maya Rudolph and Stalter have all subsequently taken their turns terrorizing Abe.
Several current cast members will remain through Yang’s engagement, including Phillip James Brannon as Mary’s Husband, Bianca Leigh as Mary’s Chaperone and Barrett Foa as Mary’s Teacher. Original cast member Tony Macht will also return as Mary’s Husband’s Assistant beginning September 15.
Oh, Mary! began life off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2024 before moving to the Lyceum, where it became the first production in the theater’s 121-year history to gross more than $1 million in a single week. It won two Tony Awards in 2025, for Escola’s performance and Sam Pinkleton’s direction.
