Across the city, after weeks of shut-downs, restaurants are finding ways to experiment with reopening. Ovenly recently held a one-day-only curbside cookie sale at their Greenpoint location. Meanwhile, Red Gate Bakery has plans to host a bakesale, just for May 2nd. Now, Alex Stupak's beloved and award-winning Mexican restaurant, Empellón will reopen just for Cinco de Mayo.

After temporarily closing last month, the team has decided to open its doors for the holiday. "Cinco De Mayo has always been an important day at Empellón, not just because of the business it brings in but also because of whom it brings in—our regulars and locals, first-time visitors, and old friends. Given that it happens to fall on a #TacoTuesday in 2020, we were really looking forward to this year’s celebration being huge," Stupak wrote on his Instagram. Missing the feeling of cooking for his customers, on Tuesday, May 5th he will offer a taco kit for pick-up and delivery at his West Village location at 230 West 4th Street.

The kit will come with two fresh corn tortillas, chicken guisado and skirt steak as well as salsa roja and verde, plus chopped onion , cilantro, fresh Limes, guacamole and, of course, tortilla chips. Though build-it-yourself element will likely not come close to the experience of eating his tacos at his restaurants, it's a small way to support Stupak and his staff while getting something delicious in return. Of course, you'll want to finish it off with a margarita, which the restaurant is offering at $8.00.

To order for pick-up—slots are available between 1-9pm on the 5th—head to the team's website. Otherwise, delivery will also go live on Caviar and you can pre-order for that starting next week.
