Raise a glass, New York—literally anywhere from a board game café to a batting cage. The State Liquor Authority just rewrote its rulebook, opening the door for dozens of adult-oriented recreational businesses to snag liquor licenses. The policy, approved at a board meeting last week, takes effect immediately.
That means comedy clubs, pool halls, axe-throwing spots, laser tag arenas, shuffleboard lounges, VR arcades and even climbing gyms can start applying for on-premises licenses. Mini-golf with margaritas? Pottery class with pinot? Suddenly possible.
The shift is rooted in a long-overlooked clause from 1933’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Law, which let the state license “lawful adult entertainment or recreational facilities.” Until now, though, those approvals were mostly limited to restaurants and traditional bars. The new guidance expands eligibility in what industry leaders say is a long-overdue modernization.
“This is about helping modern hospitality businesses grow while maintaining responsible oversight,” said SLA Chair Lily Fan. “New Yorkers are embracing social experiences that go beyond traditional restaurants and bars, and under the Governor’s leadership, our agency is evolving to meet that trend.”
Industry groups greeted the change with enthusiasm. Melissa Fleischut, head of the New York State Restaurant Association, called it “new opportunities for growth, innovation, and economic impact.” Scott Wexler of the Empire State Restaurant and Tavern Association was blunter: “It will help these businesses grow by offering more products to their customers. And it recognizes the evolving nature of the hospitality industry rather than burdening modern businesses with rules written following the repeal of Prohibition nearly 100 years ago.”
Not everyone is ready to pop the Champagne. Friends of Recovery New York urged caution, pointing out that “alcohol remains the most prevalent substance use disorder” in the U.S. and warning that wider access should come hand-in-hand with public health investment.
Still, for New Yorkers craving a drink while they chuck an axe, race go-karts or line up their next strike at the pool table, this update is cause for a celebratory round. Just remember: Climbing gyms are one place where you’ll still want a firm grip—on both your pint and the wall.
