UPDATE January 20, 2023: The new Barnes & Noble at 194 Atlantic Avenue officially opened for business earlier this week, right next to the neighborhood’s Trader Joe’s.

Author Hernan Diaz officiated the ribbon-cutting ceremony and proceeded to sign copies of his 2022 Booker Prize longlisted Trust.

"We have had a very happy 20 years at Court Street and are pleased to be able to continue our bookselling traditions in the Cobble Hill community," said James Daunt, CEO at Barnes & Noble, in an official statement. "It is an exceptionally happy turn of events that we are inheriting the beautiful space that Barneys created and we are excited to show residents our brand-new bookstore."

The store is the very first one that the company has inaugurated this year, although it expects to open over 30 new ones across the country throughout 2023.

If you're used to stocking your at-home library shelves with finds from the Barnes & Noble in Brooklyn Heights, you might soon have to re-think your shopping habits. After two decades at 106 Court Street by Schermerhorn Street, the chain is moving a block away at 194 Atlantic Avenue, inside a space that was formerly occupied by Barneys.

Bonus points: the new destination is right next to Trader Joe's, another shopping mecca in the neighborhood.

Including the Court Street shop, there are currently seven Barnes & Noble locations all over New York City and, although we're partial to the best independent bookstores in NYC, which clearly add character to our town, we'll gladly be home to whatever sort of literature-adjacent endeavor that stakes a claim locally.

Speaking of: if you fancy ordering tomes online but still want to support local businesses, considering making some purchases from these New York shops that will send books straight to your door.

And if you're looking for some literary inspiration, we adamantly advise you to invest in every item on our list of best books set in or about New York. There's just something about the Big Apple in print, after all.

Happy readings, folks!
