Last year, museums and galleries – along with other non-essential businesses – were forced to shut due to the pandemic. While things are looking up, the heightened measures in Singapore has affected many businesses, including art galleries and museums.

Independent artists are also facing challenges, especially with many events, workshops, and gigs being forced to pause. If there's a lesson we've learnt by now, is that arts can provide relief at a time where the world is in chaos. With uncertainties looming, these are the best ways to support Singapore's art scene.

Buy prints

The first step to supporting artists in Singapore is to fill your space with works by some of our homegrown talents. Art prints are a great alternative for those who can't afford to invest in original pieces of art just yet. In fact, a lot of artists sell their prints for a lot less as a way to make some cash flow and to get their art out in the world to more people – so you'll definitely be contributing to a greater cause.

Share works by local artists

With more choosing to stay home, social media is more important now than ever to spread awareness and help support artists. Share the works of the artists you love to amplify their voices and talents. Who knows, you might land them their next potential buyer.

Watch virtual theatre performances

If you're not comfortable going into physical theatres for live performances now, opt to pay to watch a virtual play instead. From a new interactive murder mystery production to a line-up of virtual talks, workshops, playlists, performances and more at SIFA 2021, we've curated some for you to watch here

Go to exhibition openings virtually

With the added restrictions, museums and galleries now have even smaller capacities for walk-in guests. Not to mention that certain festivals – such as SIFA – had to be paused or put on hold. But you can still be among like-minded folks by signing up for online discussions or virtual exhibition openings.

Join an online art class

Joining an art class is one of the best ways to flaunt your creativity, learn a new skill and connect with like-minded individuals. But with added measures, the number of participants in each class will have to be downscaled. Thankfully, there are many online classes you can take part in. Check out Soul Deelight's online watercolour and calligraphy workshops – which includes modern calligraphy, loose floral watercolour, copperplate calligraphy and more online.
