We're just going to say it, the font a brand uses can make a whole lot of difference to how they are perceived. We're not just talking about avoiding the usage of Comic Sans at all costs. There's more work – and passion – that goes behind creating impactful typography. Typography is an art on its own and has the ability to create a statement. We round up the creatives in our city who champion this art form. You may have just seen their works around.

Ewejin Tee

With a background as a product designer for agencies and tech companies, EJ is now a full-time hand lettering artist based in Singapore and Malaysia. He dreams up unique typography from scratch, with each piece having its own distinctive character. His passion has been translated into commissioned pieces for huge brands the likes of Cartier, Montblanc, Hugo Boss, Lululemon and Bang & Olufsen.

Darius Ou

Founder of his relatively young eponymous studio, Darius Ou is known for his portfolio of eclectic print and digital animations and typography, which have graced festivals and exhibitions all over the world – from the United States and the United Kingdom to Italy and Switzerland. He also initiated Autotypography, which involved creating a typographic poster every day for a year.

Currency Design

Helmed by Melvin Tan, Currency Design has been at the forefront of various arts events in Singapore including the Singapore Art Book Fair, Oh! Open House, State of Motion at Asian Film Archive, and SingaPlural. The design firm, with its works that infuse Singapore's unique culture and design, boasts works that push the envelope and seek to transcend the status quo.

Adrian Arman

Art director, graphic designer and motion graphics maker Adrian Arman keeps it low-key, but he's most commonly known for creating Picklock, a typeface inspired by Helmut Schmid and constructed out of the vowel letters of Univers, Picklock. However, he's also done works for TripZilla, National Museum of Singapore and more.

You've definitely seen Foreign Policy's designs around. The award-winning branding brainchild of Arthur Chin and Yu Yah-Leng is behind many of Singapore's popular brands and F&B establishments including Gallery & Co, Papa Palheta, The Working Capitol, Bottura and more. The studio does everything from branding to graphic design and even interiors – so you'll probably see more of Foreign Policy around.
