Ditch the couch – there’s a new independent cinema in Singapore’s financial district. Propped on the ninth floor of Capital Tower, Salt Media & Entertainment’s latest venture amps up the cinematic experience of avid film buffs.

With a keen eye to innovate and explore new frontiers, the film company sets its foot down to unlock the fun side of what is usually a very corporate part of town. Salt Media @ Capital Tower has a seating capacity of 227, a nine-metre widescreen, 4K laser projector and Dolby 7.1 sound. But what else can we expect before grabbing our popcorn? We chat with founder and CEO of Salt Media & Entertainment, Sherman Ng, to find out.

How is Salt Media @ Capital Tower different from traditional movie theatres?
We really differentiate ourselves through content curation, interesting F&B offerings and ultimately, the cinema experience. We focus more on providing a personal experience. When you come to Salt Media, you’re more than just a customer, you’re our guest. The other value we bring is for event organisers. One thing we did within our first month of launch was to organise and host a red carpet event for Storm Boy, an international film, of which we are also co-producers. We invited both the child lead actor and movie director to Singapore, and the Australian High Commissioner H.E. Mr Bruce Gosper was our Guest-of-Honour. It was a proud moment for the Australian community in Singapore and we are happy to be a part of it.

What sort of films can moviegoers expect?
The films we screen include our own movies, as well as new releases and other films that have not been released theatrically in Singapore yet.

Thoughts on cinemas in Singapore now that streaming is widely accessible?
We would like to bring back the experience or romance of going to the cinema. Streaming is here to stay and will probably grow. However, we believe cinema is still a social experience; it’s something you want to do with the people you love and want to spend time with.

Will this encourage people working in the CBD area to catch a film after work?
Yes – there’s no longer a need to drive through traffic to Orchard Road or somewhere else. Individuals or a group of friends can have a convenient and welcoming place to meet up and unwind. Organisations can also plan company events, do a movie screening or other creative activities here, which our team is happy to advise and support.

Any upcoming movies should we look out for?
We are now taking advance bookings for The Guilty, the Oscar-shortlisted and Sundance award-winning psychological thriller, releasing April 6. It’s a brilliant movie full of plot twists, and unpredictable till the very last minute. And there will be new movies lined up each month, giving people a reason to come out and enjoy the romance of the cinema experience.
