There may be no fireworks this year, but our skyline will be lit up by a different kind of light show. This year's end-of-year celebrations will instead feature 60 moving beams of light at The Promontory.

Titled 'Shine a Light', it's a circular formation of 60 lights that will illuminate the Marina Bay skyline from 8pm to 10.30pm every night in December. There'll also be a three-minute animated light sequence that will play every 15 minutes, with the last show at 10.30pm. On New Year's Eve, the last show will be at 11.45pm to countdown to 2021.

This follows an announcement by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) in November, which confirmed that it will not feature its pyrotechnics this year. Instead, there'll be fireworks displays set off at different heartlands across the mainland.

Where to view it from?

Of course, the public should still follow safe distancing measures. You don't have to head to The Promontory to view the light show. In fact, it looks even better from afar (and preferably away from the crowds).

Here are some vantage points you can admire the light beams and three-minute animated light sequence:
- The waterfront outside Esplanade
- Marina Bay Sands
- Marina Bay Waterfront Promenade
- Hotels with rooms overlooking Marina Bay (The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, Mandarin Oriental, PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay, etc)
- One Fullerton
- The Clifford Pier

More highlights

'Shine a Light' is just one of two main highlights that are part of Marina Bay Singapore Countdown. Another highlight of this year's countdown is 'Share the Moment', where a series of student artworks from various institutions will be projected onto facades of iconic landmarks in Marina Bay: namely The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, ArtScience Museum and the Merlion.

After the tough year we've collectively survived as a nation, the light show signifies a beacon of hope as we approach 2021. Already, with a number of events we can look forward to in January such as Singapore Art Week and the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival, things are finally looking up.
