I found Singapore's cosiest vinyl listening session – here's what it's like

I now know more about Jimi Hendrix than I ever did before, all thanks to a recent event I attended at Softerfields – a sanctuary for music lovers and the culturally curious.

Founded by JJ and operating on an ad hoc basis, Softerfields is a gathering space that's not defined by a single purpose. Instead, it's an indulgence in culture as a whole. One day, you might find yourself deep-diving into the discography of a legendary artist; another, you're swapping recommendations with fellow music lovers over a listening session and some grub. Whether you're here to discover new sounds outside of the internet, learn the stories behind the records, or simply experience a different side of Singapore's cultural landscape, Softerfields welcomes it all.

Thus far, most of their sessions have been in the form of vinyl listening sessions, with the spaces they occupy ranging from cosy apartments to intimate community settings.

The session I attended was Jimi Hendrix-themed. Held at an unassuming, dimly lit space, the evening was led by two hardcore Hendrix fans who guided the evening. There were drinks to help yourself to, along with sofas, chairs and floor cushions if you fancied sitting cross-legged. Then, everyone simply settled in, zoned out and listened. Between tracks, the invited musicians and speakers unpacked the stories, influences and legacy of the artist, offering context that transformed each song into a richer listening experience.

If this is your cup of tea, mark your calendars. The next Softerfields session takes place on July 24, 2026, at vintage furniture store Objects Re. Centred on South Korean musician Kim Jung Mi's album Now, ‘Vinyl and Supper Club’ explores the dreamy sounds of 1970s Korean psychedelia and the themes of censorship, control and freedom that shaped the album. Afterwards, guests can continue the conversation over Korean tea and small plates.
