It’s official – Polling Day for the Singapore Presidential Election 2023 will be happening on September 1, which has been declared a public holiday by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). Because this date happens to fall on a Friday, a number of us will be enjoying a long weekend, but other than that, here’s everything else you need to know about this much-welcomed holiday.

Who does the Polling Day public holiday apply to?

As with all other public holidays in Singapore, the Polling Day PH applies to all those who are covered by the Employment Act. Schools of all levels will be closed as well, so students will get to enjoy a break from the books.

What happens if you’re asked to work on Polling Day?

If you're asked to work on Polling Day for some unfortunate reason, you are entitled to be compensated with a day’s worth of additional salary or claim a separate day off.

Alternatively, your company may give you time off in lieu based on the number of hours you’ve worked on Polling Day. This applies to workmen earning more than $4,500 a month, non-workmen earning more than $2,600 a month, and all managers and executives.

Do I still have to vote if I am working on Polling Day?

Yes, voting in the Presidential Election 2023 is compulsory for all Singaporeans who qualify to vote. Even if you have to work on that day, your company is required by law to allow you sufficient time for the voting process.
