Nathania says playing Elle Woods with a mostly Asian cast shows how the story’s themes resonate beyond the West

Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) is set to stage Legally Blonde – The Musical, this time with a familiar face at its centre. Singaporean theatre performer Nathania Ong has been cast as the main character, Elle Woods, in the upcoming production. This marks the return of one of Singapore’s most internationally established musical theatre performers, as Ong steps into the role on home ground after years working overseas.
If the name sounds familiar, we aren’t surprised. Nathania has taken on heavyweight roles in the West End, including Éponine in Les Misérables and Eliza Hamilton in Hamilton – placing her among a rare group of Singaporean artists who have led global-scale musicals.
And for those who aren’t familiar with Legally Blonde – The Musical, a quick Google might make you think the show is all pink and glitter. But it's way more than that: it tells the story of Elle Woods, who refuses to be underestimated as she works her way through a system stacked against her, backed by an unexpected circle of women and friendships built on trust.
With its catchy, high-energy songs by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin – including fan favourites Omigod You Guys and So Much Better – this production, directed by Kate Golledge and supported by a top-tier West End creative team, gives a fresh spin to a musical audiences have been loving since 2007.
SRT is putting more of a spotlight on Elle’s smarts and agency instead of just the glam and laughs. The cast is mostly Asian, but the story still happens in its original setting, giving it a new perspective without changing the world you know. For Nathania, having Elle Woods in a largely Asian cast adds a fresh dynamic and highlights how the musical’s themes work beyond its Western context.
Legally Blonde – The Musical runs from July 29, 2026. Performances are scheduled Tuesday to Saturday at 8pm, with Saturday shows at 2pm, and Sunday shows at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are available at SRT’s website and can be bought using your SG Culture Pass credits.
