Private members club The Straits Clan has partnered up with The Artling to launch a residency programme for its Creative Studio programme, featuring four Singaporean artists: Tiffany Loy, Masuri Mazlan, Dawn Ang (a.k.a Aeropalmics) and Andre Wee. The inaugural Creative Studio will form part of the Straits Clan Arts Programme, which aims to provide a unique platform for local artists and designers to come together and hone their craft over a four-month period. The artists will work from a studio space at The Straits Clan – and the new works will be exhibited at the club at the end of the residency period.
The programme gives the four emerging artists an opportunity to create new works in a dynamic and collaborative environment, as well as exposure to a new audience of art lovers and potential collectors. The artists will create new works which will be exhibited at the club at the end of the residency period.
The artists were picked by a selection committee comprising Ben Jones of the Mandala Group, The Artling's Talenia Phua Gajardo and Kim Tay, and Camilla Hewitson, a consultant for the Straits Clan Arts Programme. “We recognise how difficult it is for artists, especially during this pandemic, to have a nurturing and safe space where they can produce their best works. We at Straits Clan believe that unless we give artists support - be it financially, via access to new audiences, or time to create new work - we risk losing an entire generation of talent," says Jones.
Lately, it seems like Singapore's art scene is seeing a much-needed emergence of residency programmes – for all the right reasons. The Creative Studio joins existing residency programmes like Cuturi Gallery's c/discoveries, which provides financial backing and guidance for young and emerging artists such as Aisha Rosli, Goh Jia Jie and Faris Heizer.
