It’s impossible for most of us to imagine the horror of fleeing by sea during the February 1942 bombings in Singapore. But soon, you have the chance to do so – even if only for a brief moment – as part of the National Heritage Board’s (NHB) Battle for Singapore programme.

Running from February 21 to March 8, 2026, the event offers a more visceral way to picture the unimaginable circumstances Singaporeans faced during the 1942 war. And forget the textbooks – NHB invites participants to explore history by stepping into the very places where events unfolded. Over 30 programmes uncover hidden sites, overlooked perspectives, and engaging experiences that bring the past to life.

This year, the spotlight is on the sea. The signature programme, Passages at Last Light: Singapore's WWII Maritime Evacuation Routes, retraces the paths taken by men, women, and children fleeing bombings in February 1942 by boat. Participants sail from the Singapore Maritime Gallery, pass St. John’s and Sisters’ Islands, and disembark at the larger Sisters’ Island, hearing stories of the evacuations and naval encounters that once unfolded in these waters.

There will also be happenings on land, such as Exploring Pasir Panjang: A Heritage Trail, guiding you through key battle sites and even secret spots like the Faber Fire Command tucked inside Mount Faber. And for the little ones, Changi Chapel and Museum lets you rebuild iconic WWII sites with Lego bricks.

Some programmes are free, some are paid, and you can even use SG Culture Pass credits for a few of them. Head to their official page to check out the full lineup and registration details.
