Woodlands is more than just a border town. It got its name from being a heavily wooded area back in the yesteryears – a view that was apparent when seen from the other side of the causeway. Now, it’s a bustling suburban town, but it’s proximity to our neighbouring country makes it easy to overlook this underrated area. The ‘hood, which overlooks the sea, means there plenty of stunning vistas to admire. And if you know where to go, there are plenty of places to grab a bite from, too – some even boasting waterfront views. And no, you can leave your passports at home.

Formerly known as Woodlands Town Garden, Marsiling Park has recently undergone a major facelift – including changing its name – to feature facilities for both the young and old to play, exercise and learn about nature. Break a sweat at its fitness corner and let the kids have their fun at the butterfly-shaped rope playground. The popular viewing tower, Chinese pavilions, stone bridge, and mangrove area have also been restored. And if you're feeling famished after a day's of exploring, take a break at Mr. Teh Tarik Cartel for some local bites and a hot cuppa teh or kopi.

Here's something different for a change. Located at the nothernmost tip of Singapore, Senoko Fishery Port is where many of Singapore's wet markets vendors and supermarket chains obtain their supply of seafood, so buying directly from the merchants here will guarantee you wholesale prices and the best pickings before they're snapped up. Shoals of fresh-caught fish are often just strewn along the ground, with baskets of prawns and other shellfish crowding the area and shaved ice spilling every which way. There's also no bargaining, and the merchants only accept cash, so if you're dropping by for a visit.

Aptly named Woodlands Galaxy Community Club, this space in the north isn't your typical neighbourhood centre. Besides your usual facilities like badminton courts, event spaces and a gym, it is also home to the Andromeda Observatory which features a 30cm telescope that gives astrophiles the best view into space. With clear skies, you can catch a detailed look of the moon, a glimpse of stars, and if you're lucky, other planets too.

Let the kids run riot among dinosaurs at Fu Shan Garden. This mini Jurassic Park is jam-packed with tunnels and slides in the form of the pre-historic, colossal creatures including a dimetrodon, sauropod, pteranodon, triceratops and of course, the mighty tyrannosaurus rex (aka t-rex). There's also a Stonehenge-like corner which illuminates in various hues come nighttime.

Take a wild ride down any one of the 26 slides at Admiralty Park located on hilly terrain with Sungei Cina river running through it. Don’t mistake it for just any regular park, it's fitted with unique slide designs and is loosely separated into three main play areas: Junior Play, Adventure Play, and Family Terracing Play. The young and the young-at-heart can slide down The Curved Roller Slide, a 34-metre-long outdoor slide lined with black tubes similar to that of a conveyor belt for easy sliding. Besides the slides, there’s an inclusive playground fitted with a wheelchair swing and merry-go-round to support play between children with and without needs.

Forget your green salad and avocados – here's a local salad we can't resist. The rojak is a mix of crunchy fruits and veggies as well as fried tofu smothered in a sticky dressing topped with roasted peanuts. Over here, you not only get black rojak but also white rojak ($3). The difference? The former is served with shrimp paste while the latter is served with sweet-sour plum dressing.

Just around the corner from Woodlands, Sembawang also has some places worth seeing. Located in HomeTeamNS@Sembawang, a club specifically for Police and Civil Defence NSmen and their families, DuitSg is a family-friendly eatery where you can dine seafood-in-a-bag style (prepare to get very messy), opt for a buffet section where you can eat all you want or order a la carte off the menu. The vibes are cheery, it's sure to be someone's birthday any night you dine in, and the cempedak creme brulee is worth trying.

SHOP

  • Shopping
  • Woodlands

Named because of its proximity to the bridge that links Singapore to Malaysia, Causeway Point is a suburban shopping mall. Expect the usual suspects: a cineplex, gaming arcades, fashion stores, knick-knack shops, a well-stocked supermarket, and at least two food courts. It's also home to the popular beauty store chain Sephora. We don't know about you but this makes Causeway Point so much cooler. I mean not many suburban malls can say they stock up on Fenty Beauty, right?

If you're new to the world of plants, it's best to stick to a plant that doesn't require much care. Pick succulents, cacti and the easiest of all – air plants. Rabbit Island has a wide selection of these plants online and available at the showroom in Woodlands. Look out for them at selected flea markets and pop-up events around town – it's usually the stall with the most people because of their affordable prices and lush set up.

Foodies in the know will be familiar with Fassler Gourmet and its affordably priced smoked salmon. Over at its factory outlet, you’ll find an extensive range of frozen, fresh, and smoked seafood and other read-to-cook items. Equally popular is its range of soups – from creamy mushroom to lobster bisque – that can easily be picked up and whipped up at home. It’s a little far out as compared to its Tiong Bahru outlet, but the variety here is much more extensive.
