Australia's most generous art award returns to Paddington's Juniper Hall

Australia’s richest art prize, the Doug Moran Portrait Prize, has been won by some of our most well known artists, including Robert Hannaford, Ben Quilty, Vincent Fantauzzo, Louise Hearman, Tim Storrier and Prudence Flint. But the competition is open to artists at all stages of their careers, leading to some exciting discoveries, such as Lynn Savery, the unknown artist who took out the $150,000 top gong in 2018.

The Doug Moran National Portrait Prize exhibition will open its doors again over five weekends from October 31. A program of artist talks will give visitors a chance to meet the finalists and discover more about their works. The venue itself is another drawcard, with the exhibition being housed in Paddington’s Juniper Hall. The historic building is the oldest standing example of a Georgian villa in Australia.

The prize was established in 1988 by the Moran family to support the arts in Australia and foster portrait painting. The 2019 judges are artist and 2013 winner Nigel Milsom; director of the Ian Potter Museum of Art at the University of Melbourne, Kelly Gellatly; and Peter Moran, managing director of the Moran Health Care Group.

The full list of 2019 finalists is available on the Moran Arts Foundation website, as well as further details on the artist talk program.
