Time Out says

This free, landmark exhibition examines the unconscious and the fantastical with works from 22 leading female artists

Step into a world of artistic wonder and feminism at Hazelhurst Art Centre’s major new exhibition, In the Arms of Unconsciousness: Women, Feminism and the Surreal. This cross-generational showcase is a feminist fever dream delving into the unconscious, the strange and the fantastical, with free entry from July 1 to September 3.

You’ll be captivated by the power and influence of women in art with newly commissioned and recent works from 22 leading female Australian artists, including Del Kathryn Barton, Jill Orr, Patricia Piccinini, Julie Rrap, Deborah Kelly, Caroline Rothwell and Juz Kitson. Each talent combines artistic techniques including painting, ceramics and photography with elements of the surreal to explore or challenge traditional representations of the female body. Some of these mesmerising pieces have not yet been seen by Australian audiences, adding an element of anticipation and providing fresh insights into personal and political issues of the 21st century.

In the Arms of Unconsciousness: Women, Feminism and the Surreal is open daily from 10am to 4pm. On top of Hazelhurst’s exciting series of artist-led workshops and talks, visitors can immerse themselves in the exhibition at Hazelhurst’s upcoming Art Fest Day on Sunday, 30 July, with live music, performances, exhibition tours, and art-making activities.
