Remember when "selfie" was a dirty word? It's since become one of our culture's greatest mediums. Add a sprinkle of historical inquiry and lashings of fabulosity and you've got the self portraiture work of queer photographic artist and costume designer Gerwyn Davies. His new exhibition Iridescent is a series of 12 large-scale works being housed at the Museum of Sydney. Davies has captivatingly responded to and reimagined the museums, historic houses and gardens under the care of Sydney Living Museums and the NSW State Archives.
Davies has transformed each site into a stage, on which an over-the-top performance takes place by the artist as a dramatically costumed character. At this exhibition you’ll discover a new perspective on each property, with costume and camera being used to conjure up a range of surreal figures, and celebrate the interesting (and lesser-known) historic subplots. And for the first time ever, Davies’ costumes will also be displayed alongside the photographs.
You can catch Iridescent at the Museum of Sydney until April 2022. Entry to the exhibition is included with museum entry: adults are $15, concession and kids aged five and over are $12. Sydney Living Museums members enjoy free entry.
And for a limited time you can also enjoy free entry to the Museum of Sydney (including Iridescent) on Friday nights between 5pm and 8pm, and weekends. Find out more information and book your tickets here.
