Every little bar that happens to Redfern makes Redfern that little bit better
Sydney’s first all hip hop, all the time bar has opened its doors just a couple of doors down from Milk Bar by Café Ish and around the corner from the Dock offering a neat set of cocktails, and a handful of wines and beers.
The walls are tattooed in images of the who’s who of hip hop. To the east, there’s Biggie, taking pride of place in all his blinged-up glory. To the west, there’s 2Pac. The rivalry continues, even in paint. On the speakers, it’s Naughty by Nature and Koffee Brown.
In the glass, it’s the Beastie Boys’ Brass Monkey – a strangely refreshing mix of Miller draft and orange juice. You know you’re going to find Gin’n’Juice – that’s a Snoop Dogg guarantee. But there’s also a Hurricane – two types of Bacardi, Triple sec, pineapple juice, grenadine.
Staff are nice enough, though not all that forthcoming with the chat – it’s always kind of disheartening when you approach the bar, all pepped up and ready to order, only to be met with indifference. Still, the drinks are cheap, the layout’s cool and the music’s great.
We’d call this a bar where you make your own fun. You don’t have to love hip hop to drink here, but it helps.
