If you’ve ever come out of a movie brimming with questions and comments, then consider joining some like-minded movie buffs for this film appreciation course at the Dendy Newtown. Every Wednesday for six weeks, you’ll attend a private premiere of a new film that has not yet been commercially released. Each screening will be followed by a group discussion with a special guest where you'll be able to explore the background, themes and cinematic elements of the films you've just seen. Occasionally the movie’s filmmakers will join the post mortem.
The featured films are kept a secret so that you approach the screening without any preconceived ideas or opinions. But rest assured that they will be quality cinematic fare, selected by critic and presenter Andrew L Urban (Movies This Week, Ovation, World Movies Channels). Last year, for instance, participants saw the award-winning Japanese flick Shoplifters a week before its Australian release.
The six-week Movies Now Course by the Centre for Continuing Education at the University of Sydney begins on Wednesday, February 5 and costs $234.
