Be serenaded by Opera Australia's star singers, under the stars
Sydney loves its culture served al fresco – and it’s hard to top Opera in the Domain for a starlit experience. Opera Australia’s all-killer-no-filler annual free picnic night features favourite overtures and arias performed by company soloists accompanied by the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra.
This year's singers are Russian soprano Elvira Fatykhova, mezzo‐soprano Sian Pendry, Korean tenor Ho-Yoon Chung and charismatic baritone Luke Gabbedy. Conducting duties fall to Anthony Legge, with the MC role shared by Rob Mills and Christopher Lawrence (ABC Classic FM).
The gates open at 4pm to enable audience members to set up camp – but mind you don't bring plastic ground sheets, ice, high chairs or beach umbrellas – all of which are banned.
The performance lasts approximately 2 hours, with an interval, and this year's program is:
Overture, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Wagner
Largo al factotum, The Barber of Seville, Rossini
Habanera, Carmen, Bizet
Dein ist mein ganzes Herz, Das Land des Lächelns, Lehár
Jewel Song, Faust, Gounod
Au fond du temple saint, The Pearlfishers, Saint-Saëns
Overture, William Tell, Rossini
Prologue, Pagliacci, Leoncavallo
Che gelida manina, La Bohéme, Puccini
Seguidilla, Carmen, Bizet
Dôme épais, le jasmin, Lakmé Delibes
De’ miei bollenti spiriti … O mio rimorso, La Traviata, Verdi
Follie! Follie! Sempre libera, La Traviata, Verdi
