To celebrate Sydney’s first major live opera performance since lockdown ended, Pinchgut Opera – which has a global reputation as one of the world’s finest companies – will be presenting Platée by Jean-Philippe Rameau at the City Recital Hall.
This hilarious and highly entertaining production (considered one of the first comedic operas to find widespread success) tells the story of Platée, the irresistibly outlandish marsh nymph who is tricked into believing that Jupiter is in love and wants to marry her. What unfolds is a twisted tale brought to life by giant video projections and digital effects, which will take Pinchgut Opera into new and exciting technological territory.
Making his directorial debut for the company is Neil Armfield, who has assembled an all-Australian cast that features Kanen Breen in the title role, Peter Coleman-Wright AO as Jupiter, Cheryl Barker AO as Juno and Cathy-Di Zhang as La Folie/Amour. Artistic director and conductor Erin Helyard will lead Pinchgut Opera’s resident chorus, Cantillation, and 26 expert Baroque players from the Orchestra of the Antipodes.
The launch of Platée also happens to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Pinchgut Opera, and to honour the occasion there will be a commemorative edition of the performance program available to purchase. It will include special features, photos and interviews from the company’s rich history, which spans 25 mainstage opera productions and five concert series.
The exclusive, five-show run of Platée commences on December 1, with ticket prices starting at $55. For bookings and more information, visit the website.
