Tune in to our Instagram for an extra special music performance from the Aussie creative

We're all about bringing all the experiences you've been missing direct to your screen, which is why we're launching our first Time In Session with an exclusive performance by Australian singer-songwriter, author and ARIA award winner Josh Pyke performing songs from his forthcoming album Rome including the latest single ‘Home'.

Rome will be released on August 28 and is available to pre-order now. It is Josh Pyke's long-awaited fifth studio album and his first release since 2015's But for All These Shrinking Hearts. Pyke hit the ground running and soared through the Australian charts in the early 2010s, you probably remember his indie hits 'Middle of the Hill' and 'Memories and Dust' being ubiquitous at the time, undoubtedly because of their local Sydney flavour and evocative vignettes ripped straight from a collective suburban childhood.

After the 2017 release of a best of album with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Pyke took a brief hiatus from music, released two acclaimed children's books, continued on his work with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and fostered a partnership with APRA AMCOS that provides budding artists with much needed grants.

He slowed down his songwriting process during this time, needling around in his home studio to rejuvenate snippets of tracks he had been experimenting with as early as 2016. Rome is the resulting album, a return to his signature nostalgia-laden storytelling and captivating melodies. Rome's songs are filled out with a little help from some of Pyke's very talented mates with appearances from Elana Stone (All My Exes Live in Texas), Stephanie Zarka on strings, Glenn Hopper (Skinny Legions) on accordion and long-time collaborator Matt Fell on bass. Pyke also flew the album over to Portland for final touches from producer Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Modest Mouse, Sujan Stevens) adding even more indie clout and depth to the finished product. Get a taste of the new record and listen to recent singles 'Doubting Thomas', 'I Don't Know' and the newest single 'Home'.

Time Out will be presenting Pyke's performance featuring new songs from the forthcoming album plus a couple of old favourites on Thursday June 11 at 7pm, so be sure to catch it on Time Out Sydney's Instagram page. The performance will be filmed at Sydney's newest craft brewery, Balmain's White Bay Beer Co.

And, be sure to tune in for our next Time In Session over on our Instagram account. We have some exciting performances in store.
