There’s nothing wrong with flowers on Mother’s Day or taking your beloved parent out to lunch, but if your mum likes things a little unconventional then here’s an alternative Mother’s Day she’s unlikely to forget in a hurry.
The Birdcage Sydney at Whirly Bird in Pyrmont is a weekly Saturday-night dinner and burlesque show. Highlighting the glamour and glitz of the 1920s, it’s an evening of feathers flouncing, sequins sparkling and drinks flowing, with performers presenting the Famous Feather Fan Dance, the Champagne Glass Act and more.
On Saturday May 11 they are presenting Mother’s Day at the Birdcage Sydney: A Unique Night for Unconventional Mums. Hosted by Robyn Loau, the show is a spectacular that features some of Sydney’s best burlesque and cabaret artists: glamorous showgirl Porcelain Alice, Mr Boylesque Australia 2018 winner Rhys Lightning, and Ivy Rose & the Lady Birds.
Tickets are $99 and include a glass of Mumm Cordon Grand on arrival and a three-course banquet produced under the creative direction of Whirly Bird head chef Joel Robinson. There will be lucky door prizes for mums too.
Burlesque has enjoyed a worldwide revival in the last decade thanks to the likes of burlesque superstar Dita Von Teese and a renewal in interest in the nightclub entertainment of yesteryear. Australia boasts a large variety of independently produced burlesque shows, and Whirly Bird is the ideal venue for introducing mum to this eye-catching art form. She’ll also have quite the story to tell her friends.
