Time Out says

4 out of 5 stars

[CLOSED] We get it. It's going to be hard to walk past Belle's Hot Chicken when you see big ass baskets of piled-up fried chicken with fries and pickles coming out of the kitchen.

But give Mamak a shot, because the chicken is actually (gasp) better than Belle's. Try the classic roti with chicken curry. What you'll get is a two-pocketed pack: one with a big fluffy tangle of freshly made roti, and the other with a pool of cardamom and clove-rich curry dotted with tender wedges of potato and a few big hunks of chicken on the bone. The chicken is fall-apart tender (albeit not free-range, grrr), and has taken on all of those flavours from the sauce. There's even a little dip of sambal on the side, all salty and fishy and perfect as a heat booster.

Or go veggie with the vegetable curry, which is more like a dahl – yellow lentils mixed with wedges of carrot, eggplant, potato and squishy tomato, gently humming with spice but not overly hot. You could go the egg roti with this (or with the chicken) if you like, which is more like an Indian-style flat roti stuffed with jiggled-about whole egg, but really that knot of barely sweet, traditional style roti is all you need here.

And don't forget to order a sweet tea. You can go hot or cold, but we go cold and it's heaven: sweet but not overly so, milky and with a good level of builder’s tea punch.
