Time Out says

3 out of 5 stars

Oatley is all wide streets, big trees and young families going about their day. And on weekends those days tend to include a stop off at Scrummies, the local providore and café doing a roaring trade in Toby’s Estate coffee and breakfast fritters.

Few things are as universally loved as a ham, cheese and tomato toastie. It covers all the food groups - dairy, meat, carbs and fruit – and you can get small children and pernickety old people to eat it without a fuss. And that’s just your standard toasted sandwich, The twisted ham at Scrummies has ham, cheese and seeded mustard in the centre of two thick slices of white bread with a melted cheese and tomato topping. The heat hadn’t quite managed to penetrate the middle of our sambo so the cheese is still solid, but nothing fuels a productive weekend like a hefty sarnie.

Sure, it might be a first world problem, but getting a savoury café breakfast that doesn’t include eggs can prove tricky at times. Fortunately the breakfast fritter here has got you covered. They come with bacon and an avocado and red capsicum relish, but without the side of furrowed brows when you try and order brekky sans ovum.

On the boutique groceries front, they stock Herbie’s spice mixes, elegant jars of small batch pickles, relishes and sauces and the kinds of fancy sweet treats that belong in a British Christmas tale. Plus the freezer is packed with fancy ice cream, handmade pastas and a range of gluten free breads for all our coeliac friends.
