Winner: Single O

Usually when you start seeing a brand's name everywhere, it's a warning sign that the quality is about to drop. Not so at Single O (formerly known as Single Origin Roasters). Sure, they've got three venues, and are wholesaling their blends to more cafés than you can shake a stick at, but it's gorgeous coffee, this, so we don't mind a jot. The Reservoir blend, named after their first outpost on Surry Hills' Reservoir Street, is a case in point. It's the standard blend for flat whites, and boasts SO's signature silky smooth style. It has only a faint backbone of heat, little to no bitterness and a bright, rather than aggressive, acidity. Our flat white is so creamy it's almost sweet, even without added sugar. Go for an espresso though and you're likely to get something completely different. They mix it up frequently with various single origin beans. The last time we were at their CBD café, we were on the Ethiopian Nansebo. It’s a refreshing, acidic little number, with citrusy, grapefruity tones. Add sugar and all that sharpness chills the hell out, and you're left with something altogether softer, and dangerously gulpable. Good choice Sydney – Single O coffee is like a little cup of luxury every time you take away. And you can use your card without paying a minimum.
