Time Out says

On your marks, get set and go to Katoomba to tackle marathons in the mountains in May

Join 6,000 athletes in the Blue Mountains at the biggest trail-running event this side of the equator. You don’t have to be a professional, but you will have to enjoy a little healthy competition if you sign up for the Scenic World UTA95: a 1.2km time-trial stair climb. And if you’re not happy with your spot on the leaderboard, you can bust your lungs on repeat attempts. The kids can get involved too, on a slightly less manic 1km trail run.

If spectating is more your sport, you can watch contestants in the gruelling (and sold out) marathons. There will be multiple viewpoints along the 50km and 100km trails that traverse the peaks and valleys of the Great Dividing Range. Catch a glimpse of runners like Australian Olympians Zali Steggall and Courtney Atkinson and Paralympic gold-medalist, Michael Milton.
