Growing up Asian in Australia is under the spotlight in this new comedic production at Riverside Theatres

Playwright Hung-Yen Yang was born in Wollongong and went through all the travails of growing up Asian in Australia. His play, A Practical Guide to Self Defence, explores how everyday racism over the decades can shape decisions both good and bad.

A world premiere at Riverside Theatres, this co-production between National Theatre of Parramatta and Merrigong Theatre Company promises a mashup of martial arts, storytelling and multimedia. Yang will take the audience on a time-travelling journey with his younger self to witness his transformation from a pacifist, asthmatic dweeb to a formidable fighting machine.

Dom Mercer directs a cast including Alan Zhu and Edric Hong. This funny and relatable play examines the tension between good and evil that exists within everyone.
