Time Out says

Catch this satirical tragicomedy directed by Margaret Thanos during the 15th annual Leura Shakespeare Festival

It’s okay to admit it… sometimes friends suck. Rally your golden ones for a night of relatable laughter and relationship reflections at the premiere of I Hate People; or, Timon of Athens. This satirical tragicomedy will unfold within the stunning open-air theatre at Leura Everglades Gardens during Sport for Jove Theatre Company’s 15th annual Leura Shakespeare Festival in January 2024.

Creative powerhouse Damien Ryan and award-winning director Margaret Thanos breathe new life into Shakespeare’s rarely performed but brutally funny Timon of Athens, which promises to flip your expectation of traditional Shakespeare on its head. Damien Ryan steals the spotlight in the lead role of Timon – a character who admittedly hates his friends and tosses up whether friendship, loyalty and love are worth it.

By shedding light on the societal anxieties of ghosting, loss and rejection, the play will prompt you to reflect on the challenges and complexities of your own relationships in the modern world.

Pack a picnic and a bottle of bubbles to enjoy on the open lawns of Leura Everglades Gardens, which will be transformed into a spectacle of Shakespearean drama, crumbling ruins, techno DJs and Greek dancing. Performances of I Hate People; or, Timon of Athens will run from January 6-21, with tickets available from $30 here.
