[title]It’s the first time in three decades that Bell Shakespeare is revisiting one of William Shakespeare's most political and turbulent works. This June and July, The Neilson Nutshell at Pier 2/3 transforms into a volatile Rome for Coriolanus.
The drama is the second production to form Bell Shakespeare’s major 35th anniversary season, headed by artistic director Peter Evans.
Hazem Shammas (Macbeth, The Twelve) leads a powerhouse cast as the fierce Roman general Coriolanus who has it all: a victory over the invading Volscians, a sweet wife and a Senate nomination for consul. All, except for the people’s vote to officially take the title.
When Coriolanus’ contempt for the public and refusal to play the political game backfires, he’s banished from the city he once protected. Will he regret his decision to team up with old rival and leader of the Volscian army and attack his former home?
Visceral, fast-paced and politically charged, Coriolanus is a blood-soaked thriller about pride, power and the price of vengeance.
