It’s pretty amazing to see what was once an idea to attract visitors to Sydney in the wintertime turn into a mammoth collaboration across the Sydney community – the largest festival in the entire Southern Hemisphere, in fact. There is *so* much to do and see, to the point that it’s quite overwhelming trying to get around to 41 light installations. Luckily, a majority of them fall between the Darling Harbour, Barangaroo and The Rocks locales, making light-hopping between all of them a breeze. We’ve rounded up the 10 best Vivid activities to visit across these dazzling foreshore hubs.

What to do in: The Rocks

If you thought The Rocks Markets were magical during the day, wait ’til you peruse them come nightfall. All the regular favourite spots will be slinging cosy comfort foods like roasted chestnuts, cheesy pizza and crispy gozleme until 11pm. One of our favourite hacks for finding one of the most special vantage points is taking your bites to nearby Dawes Point Park for Night Picnic Under the Bridge. Marvel at the Sydney Opera House and harbour views from your possie, complete with blankets, heaters and picnic rugs to keep toasty. If you’re after a more immersive hangout, don’t go past the pop-up Canopy Bar on Friday nights, hosted by 4 Doors Down (The Mercantile’s little sister). Tuck into a spice bag box and warm up with a mulled wine in the middle of the action.

Free music is always a vibe (literally). But when the artists are mega talented and pumping out hit after hit? We reckon that’s a pretty good excuse to start the party. The Rocks Square (tucked within The Rocks Markets) and 1 Hickson Road are set to turn the volume up all Vivid Sydney from Fridays through Sundays. Expect a whole lot of soul, with artists performing across the funk and R’n’B genres. Major Zulu takes the stage with a play on her Zambian gospel background, and boogie babe DJ Charlie Villas performs fresh after her set at the opening night of the Archibald exhibition. Check out the full program here

Looking to kick back and relax on a Friday eve? Free jazz sessions every Thursday night from 6pm at The Rocks Square will be your jam. The focus is on homegrown Aussie jazz musicians, and the line-up includes Andrew, Abby and also Arty, The Sticks and MIRA Trio. Hickson House will be on scene with a pop-up cart for tipples and an attractive Sip & Snack bundle where you can score a jazzy cocktail and either coconut tiger prawns or tom yum chicken baos from Snake Bark.

If you were already spoiled for choice when it comes to food at The Rocks, your dinner plans are about to get even trickier as you try to choose between dozens of deals and spectacles for Vivid Sydney. Grain Bar transforms into Dream Lab, where your glow-in-the-dark cocktail is served by mad mixers in lab coats to the tracks of DJs. Munich Brauhaus is dishing up two-litres worth of your favourite brew in a lit-up beer tower, plus some special-edition cocktails. Looking for something a little more luxe? Get front-row seats to the illuminated Opera House sails (sans crowds) at the Park Hyatt with a limited-time three-course menu. The $95-per-person feast is inspired by the festival’s theme this year: Dream.

What to do in: Darling Harbour

Mobile bar hire moguls Trolley’d are dusting off the vinyls, lacing up the skates and mixing up milkshakes for the pop-up disco diner that’s the stuff of ’50s movies. DJs will be spinning tracks while rollerskaters hit up the accessible rink. When all that cruising has you hungry, settle in for a plant-based feed by Shannon Martinez. Chow down on an all-American menu: burgers, fries and mac and cheese are on offer. Ethically-sourced and low-waste cocktails and milkshakes are also available to quench your post-skate thirst.

Learn from the best grillmasters in the game at this pop-up barbecue bonanza at The Goods Line in Darling Harbour. The flame-grilled affair was uber popular last year, and in 2025 it’s back with a multicultural twist: ‘Fire and Spice’. Alongside juicy smoked meats, you can look forward to an array of flavours and spices from different cuisines. The open-air hub welcomes local and international chefs who won’t just be dishing up deliciously smoky eats cooked over firepits at market stalls – they’ll also be hosting delish demonstrations. It’s in the perfect location to carry on your night through to the light walk.

The free music theme carries on at Tumbalong Park. The expansive stretch of grass in Darling Harbour’s central location and proximity to the foreshore makes it the ultimate pop-up event location, and Tumbalong Nights is a big one. Everyone from local artists to global guests will rock the stage over 12 nights from Thursdays to Sundays. We’re looking forward to Heartbreak High’s Ayesha Maddon, plus some big names like Aussie indie hip-hop band Winston Surfshirt and Pasifix – a vibrant display of Pacific Islander culture with contemporary sounds like reggae and R’n’B.

What to do in: Barangaroo

The new metro line has been the gift that keeps on giving, and this Vivid Sydney it’s your (super speedy) ticket to Barangaroo, where a light walk with nine installations and two conceptual pop-ups will illuminate the area. Whether you’re snapping a couple of artistic pics, or soaking up the dreamy theme, the stroll is picturesque to say the least. Alongside incredible art pieces like 12 illuminated swans dancing a water ballet, or an interactive moon swing, there will be performances and poetic talks from First Nations artists.

Whether it's eats to-go or a long dinner – Barangaroo’s dining scene has you covered for all scenarios. A heap of venues are offering Vivid Sydney specials – like Italian joint Bottega Coco’s Instagram-worthy Sydney Opera House dessert and Zushi’s special sashimi platter for $25. Mum and dad will appreciate the Winghaus family feast, which includes two burgers, two kids packs, two chips and four drinks for $75, while couples will revel in Untied’s neon decor and rooftop views over the illuminated harbour.
