Whether it’s for a weekly haul, a monthly tradition or a Christmas specialty, we could easily think of 100 reasons to head over to Blackwattle Bay in Glebe to explore the sprawling precinct. The largest seafood market in the Southern Hemisphere, Sydney Fish Market’s fresh look following its recent move has well and truly cemented its status as a favourite among local foodies.

If you’ve yet to experience it since its opening in January 2026, we’ve got even more reason for you to drop by – we’re giving away a Sydney Fish Market experience pack valued at over $1,000. The prize includes a Sydney Fish Market Tasting Tour voucher for four adults and a $100 dining voucher to your choice of Hamsi Taverna, Lua by Luke Nguyen, or Tam Jiak. You’ll also score a curated selection from Sydney Fish Market retailers including olive oil from Olivetta, wine from Fisherman Fine Wines, treats from Green Valley Goes Nuts, produce from Fruitezy, plus exclusive market merch. To top it all off, you'll take home a copy of the Sydney Fish Market: A Fish for All Seasons cookbook.

The competition is open to Sydney residents aged 18 and over. Make sure to enter below by August 6 for your chance to win.

If you haven’t made the pilgrimage to Sydney Fish Market yet, consider this your sign. Here are six reasons to stop by.

Upgrade your morning routine

The Sydney Fish Market in the early hours of a new day is really where it’s at. Wake up early and hop on the light rail to Wentworth Park, which will leave you just a short stroll from all the action. Or, if you’re feeling extra motivated, running paths cross right through the precinct, so why not weave the market into your morning workout?

Once you arrive, join a 6am behind the scenes tour then treat yourself to a coffee and a fresh pastry from Stitch Coffee, Tavira Bakehouse, Lüneburger Bakery or Little Red, and watch as fishmongers prep for the day ahead and hordes of fresh produce are loaded off trucks. Witness the masters at Lee’s Dumpling Lab hand-rolling dumplings with mesmerising speed, while the pastry chefs at Tavira Bakehouse make pulling trays of golden pastries from the ovens into an art form. If you arrive before 7am, you might even catch the excitement of the daily wholesale seafood auction. Consider your new morning routine unlocked.

Stock up on pantry essentials

If you’d rather shop at curated, independently operated retailers against a stunning waterfront backdrop, head to the Sydney Fish Market. Grab a basket and stock up on specialty olive oils from Olivetta, artisan charcuterie and cheeses from Blackwattle Deli, and premium nuts and dried fruits from Green Valley Goes Nuts. You can also pick up a bouquet at Mayfarm Flowers, a bottle for later at Fisherman’s Fine Wines, and treat yourself to some new kitchenware at The General Store. And if you need a quick caffeine fix while you browse, Stitch Coffee has you sorted — you can even pick up a bag or two of their freshly roasted beans and grinds.

Visit the market’s top fishmongers

When word first got out about plans to revitalise the much-loved market, many of our first thoughts were for the historic fishmongers that have been standing for decades. Luckily, they all made the move to the new precinct, meaning you can still order up your favourite species from your favourite vendors.

Source a fresh, daily catch of over 100 species, including whole fish, fresh oysters, shellfish, and ready-to-eat treats from trusted names like Claudio’s Seafood, Nicholas Seafood, Christie’s Seafood, Peter’s Fish Market, Musumeci, and GetFish. Our hot tip? Be sure to ask what’s currently abundant and in-season to score the best value on the day.

Order brunch with a view

Once you’ve stocked up and chatted with the fishmongers, why not stay for brunch? When you pair good food, coffee, sun and a breeze off the harbour (without a waitlist), it doesn’t take much convincing. In a city as brunch-obsessed as Sydney, we know the weekend struggle all too well. So, skip the line at your usual haunt and take your pick from Sergio, Little Red or Touch Wood. Each spot serves up classic brunch favourites alongside offerings with a seafood twist – think crispy prawn toasties, a rich crab and prawn bisque or even a "big market breakfast" featuring house-made fish and prawn sausage patties.

Grab a 3pm pick-me-up

Whether you’re picking the kids up from school or just need a little extra something to push through the final hours of the workday, the market is the perfect pit stop for a quick coffee, a snack or even a last-minute dinner run. And best of all, you can park for free on weekdays when you enter after 3pm and exit by 5pm this winter. Free parking in Sydney? Yes, we can't believe it either.

Now you have no excuse when the kids beg for an afternoon treat (sorry!). Grab a bubble tea from Gotcha Fresh Tea, head to the newly opened Yo-Chi, or stop by La Dea or Sushi Bar for a fuss-free, snack for the kids. After a sugar hit? The award-winning gelato from Cow & the Moon might be calling your name. Finally, if you forgot to plan dinner, you can easily swing by Fruitezy for fresh groceries on your way out or better yet, grab an early dinner at Lee’s Dumpling Lab or TJ Po Boys.

Dine while the sun sets

The market may be a staple of your morning routine, but with restaurants open until 10pm Sydney Fish Market is the perfect late-night destination. As the sun sets, the space transforms into a vibey waterfront dining precinct, and when you factor in hassle-free parking after 5pm for a flat fee of just $15, date nights at the market are looking mighty fine.

Head to Hamsi Taverna for a Mediterranean feast (especially for their $55 Wednesday bottomless frites night), Lua by Luke Nguyen for Asian-inspired open-flame cooking, Tam Jiak for comforting, home-style Malaysian dishes, or Mani for a modern take on Chinese and Asian cuisine. Each venue boasts a stunning waterfront location, celebrated chefs, and bold flavours from around the world. Sounding good? A lot of people are likely thinking the same thing, so you’d better make that reservation.
