So what are you doing on New Year’s Eve? Because the Sydney Opera House has a range of NYE Amadeus packages combining performances of the play with views of the fireworks, dinner and a New Year's party.
Maybe you’re already aware that famous Welsh actor Michael Sheen is coming to Sydney to star in Peter Shaffer’s play Amadeus. Sheen is a huge star of movies and TV – you’ve seen him in the Twilight films, Good Omens, Masters of Sex and Frost/Nixon.
And Amadeus is one hell of a play. It’s the fictionalised story of the musical rivalry between Mozart and Antonio Salieri – a less talented composer who has been often accused of complicity in the younger genius’s early death. The role of the admiring, envious and duplicitous Salieri is one of theatre’s plum parts. So you can imagine what an actor of Sheen’s charisma will make of it, live on the Concert Hall stage.
Multi award-winning director Craig Ilott (Smoke & Mirrors) is staging the play with 40 performers: actors, opera singers and musicians from the Metropolitan Orchestra conducted by Sarah-Grace Williams.
Tickets to the December 31 performance of Amadeus include unbeatable views of the 9pm fireworks at interval. You can add on an after-show party in the Northern Foyer where you can dance, eat and drink and toast the new year with an awesome view of the midnight fireworks. A lavish pre-show dinner is also on offer.
Tickets start at $299, with packages starting at $349pp, and you can find out more and book here.
