Sydneysiders were in for a bizarre sight last Tuesday, March 14 as a puzzling object was seen floating in the sky over Dudley Page Reserve. Given all the talk of floating objects in the news lately, puzzled locals took to social media questioning what on earth it could be. Some even said it looked a bit like a spud…

It turns out Smith’s Chips was behind the whole thing – sometimes what looks like a potato is a potato. Those in the know quickly pointed out that the adorable but confusing furry creature hanging out under the spy-potato was none other than Gobbledok, the beloved Smith’s Chips mascot from the ’80s.

But why would Smith’s pull such a stunt? Last Tuesday was National Potato Chip day and what better way to celebrate than with a hovering reminder to treat yourself to a cheeky packet of chippies.

The Gobbledok is famous for his insatiable appetite for chips, which explains why he emerged from the pantry and took to the sky. If you head to the Smith’s Chips TikTok account you’ll be able to see the mission from his perspective, as he zooms in on chippie-shaped targets from above.

If there’s one thing we learned from this spudcident, it’s that we should all keep our eyes in the sky and our chip packets close. Something tells us that this won’t be the last we see of the Gobbledok.
