Time Out says

Learn how to harvest a successful crop no matter how cramped your balcony or courtyard may be

So, you live in a Sydney apartment or terrace and would like to start producing your own fruit, veggies and herbs. That’s great, but don’t go buying plants, pots and soil willy nilly. There are a lot of farming factors to consider when sowing your first seedlings, and they get more plentiful and specific when you have less space to work with.

This Sydney City Farm talk will set you on the path to becoming a fruitful producer. The DIY farming experts from the Alexandria urban farm will be sharing wisdom, which they’ve gleaned over many seasons, about growing edible plants in a small patch. It’ll cover everything from sun conditions and working with the weather to maximising space through vertical planting, minimising water wastage and making your own fertiliser on the balcony.

Sydney City Farm’s manager Belinda Thackeray says these pre-planting steps are essential.

“People get excited, they go to the shop and they see something and go ‘yes, I want to grow those strawberries’, and take it home and it may not work. The planning phase is really important.”

The November 30 talk is totally free, and suitable for home gardeners of all abilities. But you will want to register for the 90-minute chat, as places at the Sydney Park Pavilion are limited.
